![]() ![]() Not only does Swift Publisher have a huge number of templates, you also get access to a collection of 2D and 3D heading presets, plus 2,000 free clipart images and 100 image masks. Swift Publisher really does have a lot going for it. This is a budget DTP app that has a major selling point: its selection of over 500 templates for all manner of projects, including bi-fold and tri-fold brochures, catalogues, business cards, social media, disc labels and covers, address labels and more. If you're not keen on spending much on an InDesign alternative, Swift Publisher is worth a look at least if you're on a Mac. Scribus is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. But while Scribus isn’t likely to become as powerful or feature-rich as InDesign, it's a great alternative if you’re working in indie publishing or on a personal side project and prefer to use a free DTP package. The biggest drawback is that you can’t open files from other desktop publishing software, such as InDesign or Quark. You should be able to get up and running quickly thanks to its helpful forums and documentation, and the software even comes with a free selection of templates for things like business cards, brochures and newsletters. There are also some surprising extras like vector drawing tools, emulation of colour blindness and the rendering of markup languages like LaTeX or Lilypond. ![]() With a dedicated and enthusiastic developer community behind it, it's stable to use and regularly updated, with all the DTP features you'd hope for including support for OpenType, CMYK colours, spot colours, ICC colour management and versatile PDF creation. First launched back in 2001 (when it would have been a QuarkXPress alternative), Scribus provides an InDesign-like interface and a lot more features than you'd expect from a free package. That really makes this an InDesign alternative for those who have a personal preference for the software or need to use it in a specific job.Ĭan’t import files from InDesign or QuarkXPressįinding a good free open-source InDesign alternative isn't easy, but there is one in the form of Scribus. It's not as expensive as it used to be, but still fairly pricy considering the cost of the options higher up on our list. The pricing still seems aimed at the corporate market, with a new one-year licence for the 2021 version starting at $474. The main reason QuarkXPress is not higher on this list is the cost. It offers impressive functionality for both print and digital design, and, it can import InDesign files. It can be used to create everything from posters and flyers to brochures, catalogues, and magazines, as well as ebooks and web and mobile apps. QuarkXPress is actually a very powerful and well-featured DTP package that definitely gives InDesign a run for its money.Īvailable for PC or Mac, the software is still updated on an annual basis, usually around late spring/early summer. QuarkXPress dates back to 1987, and while InDesign has since completely stolen its thunder, it's still available and it remains a good InDesign alternative. The package has a one-off cost of £49.99 / £48.99, with a few templates thrown in, making it a good value if not an entirely comprehensive InDesign alternative get all the facts in our Affinity Publisher review.īack in the days before InDesign was even a thing, QuarkXPress was the only serious desktop publishing package in the game in the 1990s and into the early years of this century it could be found in every design studio and publishing house. There’s no iPad version yet, but you can open, edit and export Affinity Publisher documents in Affinity Designer for iPad and the iPad version of Affinity Photo. ![]() You can import InDesign files, as well as raster and vector files, and you get full preflight checking to alert you to any possible errors in your documents.Īffinity Publisher can be used as part of the Affinity suite of interoperable appsĪvailable for both Mac and PC, although not for Linux, Affinity Publisher can be used as part of the Affinity suite of interoperable apps, which includes the vector editor Affinity Designer (see our Affinity Designer review) and the image editor Affinity Photo), or simply on its own. Affinity Publisher has a similar interface and can manage most of what InDesign does, with impressive page layout tools for both print and digital media. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is meant to be a Dark Fantasy, meaning that innocence and kindness is something of a rarity, for examples think Ninja Scroll, Hokuto No Ken or Berserk (there's a tiny bit I'm going to say on that later) for examples of a Dark Fantasy that's done right. That's traditional Japanese Shonen storytelling and I want to give it a pass but I just can't. What I didn't like was that a second kiss reverts Schnieder back to Lucien and its like a power up to activate him to save the day each episode. That in itself isn't a problem, that's actual classic fantasy tropes and I liked that. The main character "Lucien" is a young boy who has the soul of a Dark Wizard trapped inside him, they're two-sides of the same coin, Schnieder is Lucien as much as Lucien is Shnieder and to activate him, a pure maiden has to kiss Lucien and his caretaker is just such a pure maiden. See the spoiler tag goes on here so I have to announce it to make sure it is allowed as I won't break the rules but still explain there's going to be spoilers here. It has one element to it that has ruined it for me. ![]() I want to love this anime, it's got lots of things that I love about the ultraviolence anime genre, big muscle guys fighting with swords in a post-apocalypse world that has demons in it, what's not to love about that? Well to start with the description that this is a "heavy metal dark fantasy" is a stretch, yes there's metal in it and its in fight scenes and its in a fantasy setting with bad guys all over the place. The main game screen is an isometric view of the village.Wow, that titles rather a bad omen, especially with IMdB being part of amazon huh? Oh well, let's begin. You can also make other villages vessels (of varying levels) using diplomacy (tribute, trade and making requests).Įach village you manage can be attacked or raided by neighbouring villages or attacked by the Formors. New areas can be taken if empty or can be conquered. The aim of the game was to take over the whole of Eire and then attack the Formors (monsters) stronghold on a nearby island. The number of villagers and soldiers goes up inline with the development of the village. Heroes also represent a number of villagers and soldiers. Items are made in the village and can be given to heroes to improve one or more of their skills.

While that record displayed more of a thrash influence, it didn't deviate much from their previous traditional-metal style. After a few false starts with other singers, the guys recruited New Orleans transplant Philip Anselmo to track 1988's Power Metal. Normally a game would gradually sprinkle all these different mechanics in as you go along, but Contraption Maker doesn’t exactly have a story mode of sorts to do that with. Thankfully the puzzles are not overly complex and I was usually able to figure these out on my own, but this shouldn’t be the case with ANY tutorial. Oftentimes, you can’t tell whether your success is determined by precise placement or if you are just using the items wrong, and there’s little ways to tell otherwise.Ī lot of these are fairly simple like tutorials should be but some were just downright confusing and difficult to wrap my head around. The good news is that I can finally say I’m a full blown game journalist now because some of these tutorial levels made me want to quit. GAC filters are able improve taste and odor, and are therefore commonly used as one or two stages in a reverse osmosis system. Municipal water treatment plants use disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramine which can leave an objectional taste and odor in drinking water. GAC filters are often used to remove VOCs, pesticides, nitrates, hydrogen sulfide, and much more. Granular activated carbon (otherwise known as GAC) filters have extremely high adsorption capabilities and can remove a wide variety of contaminants (see contaminant list here). While a GAC carbon filter is simply loose pieces of carbon, a carbon block filter is where the loose pieces of carbon are compressed together to form a filter. GAC filters are usually used as a "polishing filter' in the water filtration process and are highly effective at improving the taste and odor of drinking water. GAC stands for "granular activated carbon" and is made of tiny, loose granules of carbon. What is a Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Water Filter? Activated carbon is ideal for removing chlorine, organic chemicals such as pesticides, THMs like chloroform, and many VOCs that are components of gasoline, solvents and industrial cleaners. Adsorption means that contaminants are attracted to the surface of the activated carbon and held to it, much the same way a magnet attracts and holds iron filings.Ĭarbon filters also act as a catalyst to change the chemical composition of some contaminants. How do Carbon Filters Work?Ĭarbon filters remove contaminants through adsorption. The material is then subjected to 1600-degree steam to “activate” the carbon. The steam leaves carbon granules filled with cracks and pores, enabling them to store large amounts of chemicals and contaminants. ![]() To create the filter, material is heated in the absence of oxygen to 1000 degrees to bake off impurities. Of the above-mentioned carbon sources, coconut shells are the most widely used and are highly renewable. In fact, nearly every type of water filter system-whether it's a backpacking water filter, refrigerator filter, shower filter, pitcher filter, reverse osmosis water filtration system or whole-house filter-utilizes carbon filtration in some way.Ĭarbon filters for water filtration are produced by grinding up a carbon source. Carbon is a commonly-used medium in water filtration processes. ![]() |
